TASK

In this assignment you are asked to prepare a debate on the rise in tuition fees in English Universities from September 2012. In the final stage of this web quest you and your pair will come together,  each taking on a specific role,  for or against the rise in tuition fees. Your arguments should be well supported and a suitable outcome should be found at the end of your debate.

You must follow carefully the instructions step by step in the process page whereby you will be asked to read texts or watch and listen to videos in order to gain a better understanding of the topic, construct arguments integrating new vocabulary and grammar when necessary, as input to the preparation of the final debate.

The ultimate objective  of the exercise is a Role Play situation whereby you will come together with your pair in order to debate on Tuition fees.

Your tasks

Before beginning, most of you will already have an idea on the subject. Are you for or against the rise in tuition fees? Why?

You will then choose a role, student 1 who will play the role of the student who is against the rise in tuition fees, or student 2 who will take on the role of the University Dean who is in favor of the rise in tuition fees.

You will then follow carefully the instructions on your role card (student  1 or student 2)

Activities include reading and understanding texts, or watching and listening to a video. In both exercises you must illustrate your capacity to understand verbal and written communication as well as constructing a richer vocabulary and grammatical base. A link to a website has also been given to help you with expressions to be used in the preparation of the oral debate.

This input will allow you to prepare the  final meeting which will take place between the student and the University Dean. You will be evaluated on your ability and degree of fluency in the interaction with your pair on this topical issue. The duration of the debate is 20 minutes.
